Tips For Choosing Newborn Clothes

Those last few weeks before baby is finally born are so busy with exciting preparations! One of the most exciting jobs you will have to do is buy and prepare newborn clothes! The type of baby clothing that you buy will be quite dependent upon the season that your baby is due.

If you are expecting in spring or summer you will want to buy more undershirts and light cotton sleepers, and if your baby is due in the fall or winter you will want to buy more fleece and heavy sleepers. It is important to know that all newborn baby clothes and baby bedding should be pre-washed in non-detergent soap such as Ivory Snow, this is to protect baby's delicate skin and it should be done until baby is three months of age. We have outlined some very important tips for consideration when you head to the stores or the internet to do your newborn clothes shopping!

You will need to buy these newborn clothes for your baby's layette:

  • Undershirts:
You probably know about the 'onesies' type of baby undershirts (the ones that pull over a baby's head and have little snaps between the legs). They are great, but not as newborn clothes! When your little one is so tiny - it is really hard to maneuver them into them, and they make it uncomfortable for baby as they pull tight against their umbilical stump before it falls out. It is much better to get little t-shirts that button up the front for the first month or two of baby's life. 'Onesies' are great for after about 2 months! You should have at least seven undershirts in a newborn babies layette.
  • Footsies:
For the first couple of days of life a newborn baby has a hard time regulating its body temperature and their feet, heads and hands need to be kept warm and cozy. Footsies or baby booties and baby socks are newborn clothes that are great for keeping baby toasty warm. A baby sock can also double as hand socks too, this will help to prevent baby from scratching his or her face with their often long newborn nails! You should have at least 7 pairs of socks or footsies for a newborn baby's layette.
  • Baby Pajamas or Baby Sleepers:
It is important to know that most newborn babies sleep almost all the time for their first few days of life. For this reason alone, it makes sense to dress them in cozy, warm and soft pajamas or sleepers most of the time. Remember to buy according to the season that your baby is due. Soft and light-weight cotton baby sleepers are best for spring and summer babies, and heavy cotton and fleece sleepers are best for the fall and winter. Because this is what baby will be wearing most often in his or her first few weeks of life and because of the regularity that they will spit up on their baby clothing (which is almost every time you feed them, every 2 - 4 hours!), you will definitely want to make sure you have at least 12 pairs of baby pajamas and sleepers for a newborn babies layette.
  • Hat or a Cap:
Babies do lose a lot of heat from their heads, but it really depends upon the climate that you live in as to whether or not you choose to add a hat or a cap to your newborn clothes shopping list. If you live in, for example, California or Mexico or the North East coast of Australia where it is warm all the time you will probably want to forgo a baby hat. But, if you live in Alaska, New York or the Northwest Territories in Canada and your baby is due in winter, you will probably want to add a nice warm baby cap to your shopping list! Babies really do not need a hat in the summer, it is important to remember not to overheat your baby too!
  • One Dressy Outfit:
As your newborn baby will grow so very fast and he or she will really only be sleeping for their first few weeks of life it is really only necessary to buy one nice dress or suit for the occasional special occasion that they may attend. Dressy newborn clothes will be outgrown in no time at all! You would be much better off putting your money towards dressy outfits that are in larger sizes for when baby is bigger and will be out and about a little more! Go ahead and go crazy with your baby shopping when baby is about 8 or 9 months old, always buy about 6-12 months bigger than they are in age, this way the baby clothes will last longer. You will be delighted with the selection of designer baby clothes that are available at online baby stores, so remember to check the internet when you are shopping too! We highly recommend online baby stores for their prices, quality, selection and customer service!!

When you are done shopping for newborn clothes, remember to go shopping for these baby products too: hooded baby towels, bedding blankets, receiving blankets, burp cloths, diaper cream (we highly recommend Penaten cream) and last, but not least, lots and lots of diapers!!!
