Why Every Parent Should Have a Baby Safety Gate

I remember it like it was yesterday. The sound of my baby brother’s walker tumbling down our Italian marble stairs and his piercing screams as he hit the bottom landing. I remember my mother crying, horrified and scared that he had done serious damage to his head, or rather, that she had done the serious damage because she turned her back for that split second. This incident happened 20 years ago, when a baby safety gate was heard of, but not widely used.

Thank God, my brother was okay. In fact, they say that walker saved his life. He didn’t hit his head on the stairs, but it didn’t stop my mother and father from spending an endless night of worry watching over him as he slept. That next day, a baby safety gate was installed at the top of our stairs.

By nature, little ones are curious and quick. They don’t know the dangers that lurk beyond the stairs, or around the corner, and frankly they don’t care if you are watching or not. Today’s homes come in a variety of different shapes and sizes; therefore, baby safety gate manufacturers have had to modify the standard safety gates to adapt to the changing styles of new home construction.

When thinking about purchasing your baby safety gate, take into consideration the features of your home.

  • First, determine the placement of your safety gate. Where will you be installing it? Is it for a doorway or stairway? This simple assessment may alter your choice in gates.
  • Second, there are different types of mountings for your baby gate. There is the pressure-mounted gate and the hardware-mounted gate. Both have their pros and cons, therefore, it would be advisable to have a sales associate demonstrate how they are installed and discuss their features with you.
  • Third, take into consideration the age of your child. As they grow older they will be able to use the gate to climb up and over, therefore, ensure that your purchase is done in the earlier stages of their infancy for maximum use.
  • Fourth, there are a number of elements that baby safety gates can be made from. Some are made from wood, while others can be made of metal, plastic or mesh. Whichever you choose to buy, ensure they meet the safety standards of your country.

A baby safety gate is a must have in any home. They not only prevent injury but also can act as a deterrent if you wish to keep your crawling baby from going into certain rooms, or away from pets. It is impossible to keep your eyes on your little one at all times. Baby safety gates are merely another way to ensure the safety of your child within the home. Don’t wait until an accident occurs before you make this precious investment.
