The Baby Swing Lowdown

One of my sister’s most prized possessions is the baby swing she received as a gift at one of her baby showers. Compared to many of the baby swinging devices available today, hers is relatively simple, yet it works wonders. Ever reliable and always ready at a moments notice, the baby swing is a must have for any parent.

A baby swing comes in a variety of colors, with all sorts of attachments and features. You can opt for a less expensive wind-up infant swing, or the more expensive battery operated one; regardless, they both work just as well. The main difference between the two options is that the manually operated one gently winds down and slows to a halt, whereas the battery operated swing keeps going at the same pace until you decide to shut it off. It’s all a matter of preference.

For many years, it has been a baby swing that has come to the rescue and served as a calming device for cranky crying babies. Their soothing rocking motion can lull a baby to sleep and give you those few extra minutes to do some neglected laundry or housework. Of course, an infant swing is not a substitute for human touch when your baby is upset, but it does provide an outlet for you if you find that nothing else works.

When looking for a baby swing there are a few safety features to keep in mind. Firstly, ensure that it has secure restraining straps so that your child will not slip out of the chair. Secondly, because babies are often spitting up and drooling in their early months, you want to buy an infant swing with fabric you can easily throw in the wash. Thirdly, today’s swings often recline to accommodate the sleeping baby. Ensure that the seat is padded so that when your baby does fall asleep they will be comfortable enough to be left in the chair. Other features that may be useful are canopies (if you’re going to use your swinging chair outside) and music (to help keep them soothed).

A baby swing can cost anywhere between $50 to $130, depending on the brand and the features included. Whatever your budget, there is an infant swinging device out there that can accommodate your needs. In fact, with so many options available it can be difficult to narrow down your choices. My advice is to keep in mind that the baby swings main function is to rock back and forth; therefore, if it does so in 3 different speeds with 4 song choices, as opposed to 6 different speeds and 10 song choices, is really a matter of preference. In the end, they both do the same job.
