If You Are On the Market For A Baby High Chair, Consider Safety First

If you are looking for a baby high chair, then it is important to consider a few simple safety guidelines in order to ensure that you are purchasing the best and safest baby product for your child. Each year thousands of children are admitted into hospital emergency rooms due to injuries suffered while in their baby high chair. It has become the goal of many manufacturers to design and produce high chairs that are safe, comfortable and convenient; however, in the end, your baby’s safety is in your hands.

When purchasing a baby high chair first consider stability. Look for chairs that have a wide base to ensure that they won’t tip over once the baby is sitting in them. Furthermore, if your child is walking around and decides to tug on the highchair, a wide base will help prevent highchairs from toppling on them. If it comes with wheels, check to see how the balance of the chair is affected when you move it around. Also, make certain that high chairs with wheels come equipped with brakes so that they are secure and safe when stationary.

Another important aspect to consider when purchasing your baby high chair is the safety harness. Examine the straps and ensure that the waist belt has a buckle that can’t be fastened unless the crotch strap is also used. Some high chairs do not have a crotch strap and that can be very dangerous. Your baby could easily slip through the seat, which could cause some serious injuries should their neck get caught in the strap. Consider purchasing a highchair that has a 5- point harness for the ultimate safety measure.

If you are considering purchasing a baby high chair that is second-hand or has been passed onto you by a friend, check the condition of the straps and make sure their attachments work properly. Also ensure that the highchair is stable and that it won’t easily tip over if your child decides to become rambunctious while you’re feeding them, or preparing dinner.

Of course there are also the common sense safety guidelines for any baby high chair you purchase. Ensure that all accessories are provided and that the safety belts fit snuggly around your child. The feeding tray does not adequately restrain your child from falling out of the highchair so never depend on it as a deterrent. Ensure your child never stands up while in their eating chair because it could easily tip over, and never leave your child unattended while they are in highchairs. It’s amazing what a little one can do when you least expect it.

A baby high chair is a necessary item and one of the more important ones you will buy for your child/children. There are many on the market and each one offers something unique, yet highchairs should all have the above safety features. You may find that some of the high chairs with all the safety features and accessories are a little more expensive, but it’s worth it if you can ensure that your child will be safe during breakfast, lunch and dinner.
